This document describes the privacy policies for our MagniLink ChromeViewer software. We currently offer two variants — MagniLink ChromeViewer 3 and MagniLink ChromeViewer 4 — each described separately below, as they process data differently.
This Privacy Policy explains how LVI Low Vision International AB (org. no. 556197-3610), Verkstadsgatan 5, 352 46 Växjö, Sweden (“LVI”, “we”, “us”), acting as data controller, processes your personal data when you use MagniLink ChromeViewer 3 or MagniLink ChromeViewer 4, in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
MagniLink ChromeViewer 3 is a Chrome App that gives low-vision users control over their LVI camera (zoom, contrast, artificial colors, etc.) and includes an OCR feature to convert pictures or documents to text.
Google Account access. When you sign in with Google, we request access to your Google Account so that the app can create and delete files in your Google Drive, which is required for the OCR feature to work. We do not use your email address for any purpose, and we do not read or delete any files other than those created by MagniLink ChromeViewer 3.
OCR requests. When you run an OCR request, the image you select is uploaded to your own Google Drive via the Google Drive API, processed by Google’s text-extraction service, and the result is downloaded back to you through the same API. The image may contain personal data — for example, if it’s a photo of a document, letter, or ID card.
Special category data. Because the app assists users with visual impairments, images submitted for OCR may occasionally contain special categories of personal data under GDPR Art. 9 (e.g., health-related information or personal documents). LVI does not actively collect, store, or profile this data — it is processed transiently and solely at your direction to deliver the requested text-extraction result.
We do not download or store a copy of your images, documents, or OCR results. The image and its extracted text exist only in your own Google Drive and pass through Google’s systems to deliver the result back to you.

MagniLink ChromeViewer 4 is a Chrome Extension that gives low-vision users control over their LVI camera (zoom, contrast, artificial colors, etc.), includes a Notepad feature for annotating pictures, and — with an OCR license — can convert pictures to text and read them aloud.
Google Account access. When you sign in with Google, we request access to your Google Account solely to verify your Google Account ID against a license key. We do not use your email address for any purpose.
OCR requests. When you run an OCR request, the image is uploaded to Amazon’s Textract API (USA), which extracts the text and returns it to you. The image may contain personal data — for example, if it’s a photo of a document, letter, or ID card.
Special category data. Because the app assists users with visual impairments, images submitted for OCR may occasionally contain special categories of personal data under GDPR Art. 9 (e.g., health-related information or personal documents). LVI does not actively collect, store, or profile this data — it is processed transiently and solely at your direction to deliver the requested text-extraction result.
Notepad feature. Notes you attach to your pictures are stored locally within the extension on your own device. LVI does not have access to, and does not receive a copy of, this content.
We do not download or store a copy of your images, notes, or OCR results.

Google and Amazon are U.S.-based companies, so using either OCR feature involves transferring your image data outside the EU/EEA. As of the date of this policy, both Google LLC and Amazon Web Services, Inc. self-certify under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (DPF), which the European Commission has recognized as providing an adequate level of protection for such transfers, so no additional safeguards are legally required for transfers made in reliance on it.
Because certification status can change, we recommend confirming current status on the Data Privacy Framework list before relying on it, and we review this ourselves periodically. If a provider is ever not (or no longer) DPF-certified, we rely instead on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) as the transfer safeguard, as provided for in each provider’s own data processing terms.
LVI does not store your personal data on its own systems. Data transmitted for the purposes above (Google Drive file creation/deletion, license verification, OCR processing) passes through momentarily to complete your request and is not retained by us afterward. Any data that resides in your own Google Drive, or that is processed by Google’s or Amazon’s systems, is governed by their own retention practices — see their privacy policies below.
MagniLink ChromeViewer relies on third-party services from Google and Amazon to provide the functionality described above. Your use of these services is also governed by their own terms:
LVI does not control these providers’ privacy practices and encourages you to review their policies directly.
MagniLink ChromeViewer is frequently used in educational environments. We are committed to protecting student privacy:
No Commercial Use or Advertising: LVI does not sell, rent, or trade student data, nor do we use student personal data for targeted advertising, marketing, or profiling.
Educational Purpose Only: Any processing of data (such as OCR or license checks) is conducted strictly to deliver the educational and accessibility features of the software.
Parental & School Rights: Because OCR files and notes reside in the user’s local extension or Google Drive, parents, legal guardians, or educational institutions can delete these directly within those accounts.
Data Retention: LVI does not retain student data on its own systems. Transient data sent for OCR processing is deleted immediately after the text-extraction result is generated.
Security: All data in transit to our processors (Google and Amazon) is encrypted using industry-standard protocols (e.g., TLS/HTTPS). Access to systems used for licensing and service administration is restricted to authorized personnel and protected through appropriate technical and organizational measures.
To ensure continuous protection, LVI maintains a formal Data Breach Response Plan to immediately detect, contain, and lawfully report any security incidents.
LVI does not control the retention practices of Google or Amazon, but selects providers that offer contractual and regulatory commitments consistent with applicable privacy laws.
LVI follows the principle of data minimization and only processes the minimum amount of personal data necessary to provide the requested functionality.
The software is not designed to collect personal information directly from children. Any personal data processed through OCR functionality is processed solely at the direction of the user, school, parent, or guardian.
As a data subject, you have the right to:
Access the personal data we hold or process about you
Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data
Erase your data (“right to be forgotten”), where applicable
Restrict or object to processing in certain circumstances
Data portability, where technically feasible
Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent (this does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal)
Because LVI does not store your data, most requests will concern data held by Google or Amazon as processors, or the scopes/permissions granted to our app — you can review or revoke Google Account access at any time via your Google Account permissions.
